The official terms are smooth coat and long coat. They are the same breed genetically, but they are judged in different categories in dog shows. A smooth coat only means that it has short hair, the hair can actually be soft and smooth or wavier and coarser to the touch. There is no difference between a long coat chi and a smooth coat chi, except in the look.

It is important to consider when considering adopting a long coat chihuahua that it requires more grooming. Their hair requires frequent brushing or it can get matted. They take longer to bathe and dry. The hair needs to be trimmed especially near the hindquarters, or dirt and “other matters” can cling to the excess hair. On the other hand, long coat chihuahuas actually shed less than short coats, especially with frequent brushing.
