Recently a chihuahua meet-up group in my area sponsored a microchip clinic and some people came out strongly against it. What’s the big deal and should I get my chihuahua microchipped? What are my alternatives?

How do I paper train my chihuahua?

My husband and I work all day and we don’t want our schedules to dictate when our chihuahua goes to the bathroom. We would like to train her to use a wee wee pad or newspaper. Is it hard to paper train chihuahuas? What’s the best way to do that?

Editorial: Pets and real estate

The New York Times recently had an article, “So, Do I Make the Cut?”, highlighting the problems pet owners faced when renting or buying apartments in Manhattan.

Among the ridiculous things mentioned in the article:

  • Bogie, a 12 lb shih tzu, had to pass an “admission exam” in front of the building manager and lawyer of a luxury rental building. (Bogie passed, but his owner opted for a more pet-friendly building in a $7000-a-month-2-bedroom.)

Editorial: The rising popularity of small dogs

The New York Times recently published an editorial by Mark Derr titled “The Little Dog Has His Day,” that embraced the rising popularity of small breeds. Mr. Derr is better known for being fond of larger dogs and critical of the breeding practices that has produced mutant toy breeds. According to him, toy breeds are “eentsy, primped and preened, frivolous creatures that tremble and yap.” He is a self-professed “canine sizest.” More on Editorial: The rising popularity of small dogs

My dog has dandruff, what do I do?

I was petting my chihuahua the other day and noticed he had a lot of dandruff. He’s black so it’s very noticeable. Basically, there were white flakes everywhere. I tried brushing him but it just gets rid of some of it. How can I get rid of his dandruff?

What should I do with my dog while I’m on vacation?

My wife and I are going on a much needed one-week vacation next month. We can’t take our chihuahua with us and we have no idea what we’re going to do with her. Should we leave her with friends, hire a pet-sitter, board her at a kennel? We are totally stressed out about this and really need some advice.
